Why Open Source ?

Open-source software is FREE in more ways than one.. Yes, that's right, it's free you can download it from the internet and install it if you have the time, inclination and skills. Alternatively, you can engage a company to install OSCAR for you, provide training to your users and provide technical support and ongoing maintenance. The latter option is by far the easiest and the costs are very reasonable.

Open-source software is also FREE in the sense of FREEDOM, and this is by far the most important aspect of choosing to use an open-source EMR. The source code for OSCAR is published on the internet which enables companies like OSCARwest to understand what is happening 'behind the scenes' in the program and provide support services.

What is the implication of this, for you, the user? Well, you can seek installation and support services from anyone who has taken the time to understand how OSCAR works. This creates a true market-place for companies supporting OSCAR, which controls costs because you are not 'locked in' to one supplier. Compare this to closed-source, often known as 'proprietary' EMRs ie all other mainstream EMR's in Canada. With those systems you, and your data are locked in to the one company that writes the software. Your fortunes are tied to their fortunes.If they go out of business, you have a serious problem if they stop supporting their product, you have a serious problem.
